When You Have A Lion In Your Loft & You’re Not Sure What To Do

In one of my favorite translations of a cuneiform tablet, a servant has to endure an unwelcome house guest and asks his master what to do.

A few years ago, a mountain lion was found under astonishingly similar circumstances to the one found living in the loft of the 2nd millennium BC house. It was found living in the crawl space of a Los Angeles home by an unsuspecting security technician.
You can find out more about the cuneiform tablet here: Letters From Mesopotamia: Official, Business, and Private Letters on Clay Tablets from Two Millennia by A. Leo Oppenheim (1967), The University of Chicago Press, page 108. This book is currently out of print, but a more or less complete pdf version is available for download from The Oriental Institute at The University of Chicago.
